Abstract
The collimation of double extragalactic radio sources has been studied using a sample of known double sources which possess both interplanetary scintillation and interferometer observations. These data indicate that the mean collimation factor (longitudinal extent/transverse extent) is of the order of 100. A discussion of this result in terms of the beam model for double formation has been made. While some variations of the beam model are easily able to satisfy this observation (most notably the compact model of Wiita 1978), this result provides interesting constraints, as regards fluid equation of state and nozzle geometry.
