The effects of chronic [DELTA]-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) use on cerebral glucose metabolism in multiple sclerosis: a pilot study

Abstract
This exploratory pilot study investigated the effects of chronic [DELTA]-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) on cerebral glucose metabolism in people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS). Compared with nonusers, THC users had hypermetabolism of 3 regions (p < 0.039, d >1.17) in left temporal areas, while CBD users had hypometabolism of 5 regions (p < 0.032, d > 1.31) in left temporal areas. This study highlights the need to discriminate between THC and CBD in future cannabis studies. Novelty * Chronic THC and CBD use had disparate effects on cerebral glucose metabolism in PwMS. Cette etude pilote exploratoire examine les effets de la consommation chronique du [DELTA]-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (<< THC >>) et du cannabidiol (<< CBD >>) sur le metabolisme cerebral du glucose chez les personnes aux prises avec la sclerose en plaques. Comparativement aux non-utilisateurs, les utilisateurs de THC presentent un hypermetabolisme dans trois regions (p < 0,039, d > 1,17) des aires temporales gauches, tandis que les utilisateurs de CBD presentent un hypometabolisme dans cinq regions (p < 0,032, d > 1,31) des aires temporales gauches. Cette etude souligne la necessite de faire la distinction entre le THC et le CBD dans les futures etudes sur le cannabis.
