Abstract
Since the 1970s, the number of orthopaedic surgeons with knowledge and experience to sustain productive research programs has been declining. A number of factors have contributed to this. Other than income is the fact that junior orthopaedic faculty are not given an opportunity to acquire necessary skills. To keep forward, established academic orthopaedists must encourage young investigators and give them advantages and opportunities they need to acquire.
