The pigeon's perception of depth-rotated shapes: Picture perception in animals

Abstract
Examined pigeons' viewpoint-invariant recognition of 3 dimensional objects. In Exp 1, 8 feral pigeons were food reinforced for pecks to a display screen showing only 1 view of arch, brick, cone, cylinder, pyramid, and wedge shapes with realistic shading and lighting cues. In Exp 2, 5 different views of the same shapes were food reinforced for 4 Ss. Results show that 1-view training produced reliable stimulus generalization to a majority of nonreinforced views of the stimulus. Five-view reinforcement produced reliable stimulus generalization to all nonreinforced views. Findings suggest that criteria operate in pigeons' perception of objects that are in addition to the 3 proposed by I. Beiderman and P. C. Gerhardstein (1993, 1995), that an object must be composed of distinct parts, that it possess a distinctive structure, and that its description remains the same when rotated in depth.
