Abstract

The suggestion is investigated that the broad radio spectra of compact extragalactic radio sources may be produced by superposition of a number of subcomponents. If the subcomponents have radio spectra indicative of a homogeneous synchrotron source, then typically three to four subcomponents are needed, and their frequencies of maximum must be arranged in a highly nonrandom and apparently artificial fashion. If the subcomponents have inhomogeneous synchrotron source spectra, fewer subcomponents are required, and the nonrandomness of the turnover frequency distribution is weakened.
