Abstract
The rings R ( X ) and R 〈 X 〉 are investigated. Of particular importance is the question of when R ( X ) or R 〈 X 〉 is an arithmetical ring, a Prüfer ring, a Hilbert ring or a Euclidean ring. Answers are sought in terms of the base ring R .
