Abstract
Introduction. - How tall were the highest buildings in ancient Rome and how many of these tall buildings existed? Scholars seem agreed that there were many "skyscrapers" in the ancient city of Rome. To Jerome Carcopino : "In contrast to the Pompeian domus (private mansion), the Roman insula (apartment house) grew steadily in stature until under the Empire, it reached a dizzy height. Height was its dominant characteristic and this height which once amazed the ancient world still astounds us by its striking resemblance to our own most daring and modern buildings."
