Abstract

1st part of a 2-part review of the use of tissue expansion techniques for the reconstruction of scars following burns injuries, focusing on the history, pathophysiology and use in different parts of the body and in paediatrics. Physiological changes occurring in tissue expansion relating to areas including hair, trunk, breast, bones, circulation and scalp, are described, and the challenges associated with its use in children and for burns to the face and neck are discussed. 90 references
