Abstract
In recent years, many exciting advances have taken place in the science of nursing. Research has led to new technologies and approaches to providing more efficient and effective care for cognitively and physically impaired older adults. Sometimes, however, in this rapidly changing health care environment it is a good idea for nurses to pause briefly and reconsider the "basics" of good nursing care. One such example was a recent issue of the Journal of Gerontological Nursing devoted to the history, art, and skills of bathing patients (Stilwell, 1997). In a similar vein, this column strives to remind gerontological nurses of the importance of active listening, the value of patient histories, and the significance of personality in caring for the mentally and physically ill elderly, using both theoretical and clinical examples to illustrate these points.
