Abstract
Describes the characteristics of Tibetan chanting and harmonic singing. Addresses the low and constant pitch of chants, producing droning, which is contrasted with overtones maintained at exact multiples of the fundamental frequency. Likens such harmonic singing to formant singing, in which vocal tract resonances are achieved by sharply tuning the resonances before changing the formant pitch. Tibetan chanting and harmonic singing may be used for either purposes of meditation or in the context of extended vocal technique.
