Abstract
Research in the area of clinical voice measurement spans a broad range of approaches. Advances have been made toward improving ratings of perceptual aspects of voice quality. Using “anchors” as a means to improve rater reliability is advocated. Advances in laryngeal imaging may bring more objectivity to the process of image analysis and interpretation. Computed tomography, for example, has been used to calibrate videostroboscopic laryngeal images. Studies involving various approaches to acoustic and physiologic signal processing remain the primary source of objective information about voice production, although the validity of some of those measures remains unclear. This review considers recent work in perceptual evaluation, signal processing (acoustic, aerodynamic, electrophysiologic), and imaging approaches to the clinical study of the human larynx and voice production.
