Abstract
A statement of the Laws and Precepts about which there should be universal agreement among Teachers of Singing (Note.-This first draft is submitted by the Editorial Committee to the members for their comment and any suggestions for revision) Associate Editor's Note: In December 1945, the year World War II ended and I fled as a four year old child from war-torn East Germany to West Germany, an article with the above title was written in The Bulletin of NATS as a consensus among singing teachers. Before the vocal mechanism can function normally the singer must be freed from any habitual muscle-tensions which interfere with the functional response of muscles that properly participate in the act of phonation. [...]release of interfering muscles has been established, the teacher should persistently assist the pupil to acquire release from any such habitual muscular tensions. [...]the Chairman of the Editorial Committee, Mr. Shirley M. K. Gandeli, 1625 Kimball Building, Chicago 4, Ill., should receive the views, pro or con, from every one of our 478 members and at the earliest possible moment. Dr. Titze has served on a number of national advisory boards and scientific review groups, including the Scientific Advisory Board of the Voice Foundation and the Division of Research Grants of the National Institutes of Health.
