Abstract
Transcatheter secundum atrial septal defect closure is a safe and effective procedure, largely replacing surgical closure over the last few decades. Rarely, transient and permanent atrioventricular blocks have been described following atrial septal defect closure, particularly when utilizing relatively large Amplatzer Septal Occluders in small patients. In this case report, we describe two patients with a patent foramen ovale and an atrial septal defect with transient high grade atrioventricular block following closure with the Gore Cardioform septal occluder and Gore Cardioform ASD occluder, successfully treated with short courses of prednisone.
•Heart block has been reported most commonly with the Amplatzer family of devices•Heart block is possible with the softer, conformable Gore family of septal occluder devices.•Transient heart block may be reversible with prednisone
