Abstract
Introduction: This study explores healthcare providers’ perceptions and experiences with two tools designed to assist providers in implementing cognitive care planning (CCP): the Alzheimer’s Association Cognitive Impairment Care Planning Toolkit, which is a paper-based tool and BrainCheck Plan, a digital platform. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were carried out with 17 healthcare providers from three medical centers (i.e., each located in an urban, a rural, and suburban setting) and one outpatient clinic in the Pacific Northwest area of the United States. All interviews were conducted from July to December 2023 on Zoom. We analyzed interviews that explored providers’ experiences with and perceptions of anticipated use of digital and paper-based tools to assist in CCP. Inductive analysis was employed. Results: Four major themes and subthemes that characterize the key attributes contributing to the desirability and feasibility of CCP tools for routine use in clinical practice were identified. Major themes included: adaptive features, ready-to-use, patient willingness and feasibility, and infrastructure. Conclusion: The possibility of CCP tools that can be easily integrated into the existing appointment structure and used alongside systems, such as EHRs, are perceived positively. Providers also emphasized the importance of tools that would be well received by older adult patients and their caregivers who may experience distress when dealing with an excess of information and face challenges navigating digital tools.
