Understanding Definite Integrals in Various Contexts with Modified Tasks

Abstract
In this article, we share possible tasks that would positively influence students to think about the
product layer and adding up pieces to understand definite integrals in various contexts. Since
students often successfully compute definite integrals without necessarily knowing the meaning
behind them, it is meaningful and productive to use the product layer and adding up pieces to
think more precisely about what each notation represents to understand why definite integration
is useful in science and engineering contexts.
