Abstract
Substantial shares of college students, and especially those from minoritized and marginalized backgrounds, struggle to meet their daily material needs, hindering their well-being and ability to attain college success. In response, colleges have implemented an array of campus basic needs services. However, prior research is fragmented and tends to focus on a single service. This paper jointly considers multiple services on a university campus and finds that just 1 in 10 undergraduates used any basic needs service. Although services are not reaching all in need, students from minoritized and marginalized backgrounds are more likely to use services, which has important implications for equity. Among basic needs service users, most undergraduates received a modest amount of support and used only one service for a single semester. These findings suggest that, contrary to negative stereotypes, most students who access these resources do so in acute times of need rather than relying on them as a consistent or major source of support during their college career. Further investment and attention to implementation are necessary to better serve college students and promote college success.
