Abstract
The authors discuss methods for teaching negotiation skills to elementary students in order to develop scientific communication skills such as argumentation and critique. U.S. science teaching standards, inquiry-based education, and teachers' influence over language behaviors in class discussions are discussed, as well as active listening skills, questioning skills, and peer-to-peer negotiations. Classroom environment and student engagement are also mentioned.
