Abstract
An experimental study was conducted to clarify sediment particle motion and its relation to the dune migration. High-definition action video cameras were utilized to record the images of particle motion in a domain covering dune scale. Image processing was conducted to homogenize the illumination heterogeneity due to bed form and light reflection at the water surface. Then, Particle Image Velocimetry was conducted to quantify the instantaneous velocity distribution of sediment particles. Unsteady sediment motion and its relation to the shape, deformation of the shape and migration of dunes were discussed.
