VLA observations of the distant radio galaxy 3C 411

Abstract
The Very Large Array has been used to make scaled-array 6- and 20-cm observations of the distant (z = 0.469) radio galaxy 3C 411. These observations were made to study the extended lobe and bridge emission in this source. Our observations revealed several noteworthy features of the source: (1) Heavy depolarization is observed throughout the object. In portions of the source, the ratio of 6- to 20-cm fractional polarization exceeds 10. (2) The spectral index rapidly steepens outside the hot spots, but then shows little variation over much of the lobes. (3) In both lobes, the 6-cm polarized intensity reveals a shell structure, which is consistent with the partially ordered magnetic field model of Laing (1981). (4) There appears to be a radio jet connecting the central component with the hot spot in the western lobe. This hot spot, however, is both less intense and more extended than that which is not associated with a detectable jet.
