Abstract

Defines noise as "unwanted sound," while explaining that perception of what constitutes noise varies greatly among musicians. Observes that many vocalists use noise and distortion as expressive devices. Discusses the concept of "fill in" between the harmonics of loud musical sounds, focussing on some methods of vocal production by opera singers who need to sing loudly to be able to be heard over the orchestra.
