Abstract
Reports on some informal experimentation made by the author to test the widely-held conventional wisdom of vocal pedagogues about the necessity for widening the pharynx for classical singing. Discusses three major results of the widened pharynx, including lowering of the first formant frequency, boosting the singer's formant, and acoustic decoupling of the vocal folds. Includes a diagram comparing hypothetical positions of the vocal tract for speech versus singing.
