Abstract
A study in which a baritone and soprano underwent an MRI while singing and speaking three vowels (/i/, /a/, and /u/). The study was conducted to observe pitch-vowel interactions. In general, pitch-vowel interaction is complex. For each of about 10 vowels, there are two to three formants to consider and three to four harmonics to keep track of for every pitch. A dynamic computerized version of Berton Coffin's pitch-vowel charts is probably the answer to the future, tailored to every individual singer.
