Voice Research and Technology: Concone's Thirty Daily Exercises - An Interesting Variation

Abstract
The author discusses his attempts to execute Giuseppe Concone's Thirty Daily Exercises with phonation into a straw. The initial difficulty was clearly separating individual notes, particularly in rapid scales or arpeggios. Phonation into a thin straw accomplishes automatically what laryngeal muscle action is supposed to accomplish in messa di voce: to separate the vocal folds slightly during a crescendo. This is important in order to keep voice quality constant.
