Abstract
The computerization of organization-to-organization, unit-to-unit, and person-to-person transactions has been called electronic commerce. While the potential repercussions of a digital commercial revolution on business and the economy at large are staggering, most insurers today do not enjoy major competitive advantages in electronic commerce, nor are they at a major competitive disadvantage. However, this situation could change quickly. The insurance industry and its regulators will have to address 4 major issue areas in developing a viable electronic marketplace for insurance: 1. technology, 2. business development, 3. implications for industry structure and performance, and 4. public policy and regulation.
