Why no corporatism in the United States?: Business disorganization and its consequences
Business and economic history, Vol.27(1), pp.29-46
1998
Abstract
For many reasons, the notion of American exceptionalism has lost the interest of American historians. By any measure, the American political economy is the clown prince of corporatism: each of the 3 pillars of corporatist order - business, labor, and politics - are very weak. The relatively familiar patterns of labor and political disorganization are examined, and the bulk of the attention is devoted to the riddle of business organization. The important point is this: the peculiarly American pattern of labor organization and politics reflected not the exceptional character of American workers or American unions, but the exceptional political, legal, and economic setting in which workers and their unions found themselves.
