Abstract
This essay looks at James Schamus's 2016 film Indignation alongside its source material, Philip Roth's 2008 novel of the same name. Among the biggest differences between the two texts is that the film simplifies Roth's plot and flattens the character of Marcus Messner. But by moving beyond Marcus's point of view, Schamus's film casts a new light on Roth's novel and the emotion evoked by its title.
