Countering the Corporate Diversity Backlash
MIT Sloan management review, Vol.64(4), pp.1-3

Abstract
Corporate diversity is facing a backlash as opponents of inclusive business practices become more vocal. Companies like Target, Anheuser-Busch, and Chick-fil-A have faced criticism and boycotts for their diversity initiatives. Universities are also facing resistance to diversity efforts, with recent court rulings striking down race-conscious admissions programs. This backlash puts companies in a difficult position, as giving in to anti-diversity pressure may harm their reputation and long-term success. However, diversity initiatives themselves have often been tentative and ineffective, with one-off training sessions and unsupported hires. To counter the resistance, leaders must be prepared to defend inclusive organizations and adopt policies that make it difficult to roll back diversity gains. Accountability and transparency are key, with leaders taking responsibility for implementing equity programs and holding employees accountable for diversity goals. Openly discussing an organization's commitment to diversity can help reduce resistance and lead to progress. Organizations must confront the diversity backlash head-on and take a strategic planning approach to embed equity within their mission, values, culture, and practices.
