Abstract
Robinson reflects on the election of Donald Trump, initially believing that America's democratic institutions--such as the press, courts, and political opposition--would effectively limit his authoritarian tendencies. However, the perceived weakening or capitulation of some of these institutions has raised concerns about the resilience of the system. The situation appears historically unusual, with a wealthy figure leading a populist movement. He turns to the two-party system as both flawed and essential, arguing it still offers a mechanism for democratic choice and public influence. While alternatives like multi-party systems or one-party rule present risks of minority control or dictatorship, the current binary system can still express collective approval or dissent. However, public opinion is often oversimplified or misinterpreted, as seen in political narratives focusing narrowly on "affordability." This framing diminishes broader concerns and underestimates voters' capacity for meaningful political judgment.
