Google has become a ubiquitous search tool that has shaped the way we engage with the Internet. This semester-long, one credit hour first-year seminar course encourages students to step back and examine Google with a critical lens. To do this, we will explore what exactly Google is, its history, how it functions, how data is used, ethical considerations, and search tools and tricks that will allow us to more expertly engage with online content. This course is structured around short readings, podcasts, videos, written reflections, and weekly discussions. Together, we'll think critically about Google and develop valuable digital literacy and research skills along the way. At the end of the semester, we'll summarize our weekly reflections through oral, written and/or digital presentations.
