Pathways to Discovery: Clinical and Legal Trials, Academic Rigor, and Public Perceptions
Presidential Lecture Series, 41st (Iowa City, Iowa)
02/19/2024
Abstract
The ultimate goal of academic research is to discover truth. Yet all discipline have their own principles of academic rigor, their own research processes, and even their own criteria for what constitutes "truth" in their areas of expertise. As well, "truth" always evolves with more information, data, and understanding. Academic pursuits become even more complicated when researchers and institutions communicate their discoveries to the public, who have their own perceptions of what constitutes the truth. Professors Tilley and Coffey will explore the academically rigorous processes of their respective disciplines—law and public health—in pursuing truth and the challenges of bringing discoveries to the general public.
