Abstract
Welsh, the director of the UI Cystic Fibrosis Research Center, is among a team of UI doctors and researchers who recently identified a defect in the genes of those afflicted with cystic fibrosis – the most common fatal recessive genetic disease among Caucasians of Northern European descent. Welsh's speech, titled
"The Pathway of Discovery in Pursuit of a Genetic Disease," will discuss the ups and downs in the team's pursuit of a cure for this disease, which kills nearly 400
Americans every year.
