Abstract
This research project case study describes the research practicalities and design of a mixed methods dissertation study about the language-learning motivation of students who had attended a language immersion school. Mixed methods research, an approach to research in which elements of both quantitative (numbers-focused) and qualitative (words-focused) approaches are used, can take many different forms. It also comes with its own challenges and advantages. This study demonstrates one way that design decisions can be made and implemented in a mixed methods study. The end result of a strong mixed methods study is a set of firmly supported inferences that draw from an integration of the quantitative and qualitative approaches.
