Abstract
More than 40 yr of Communist rule have left a legacy of environmental problems in the Czech Republic. Some endangered species are now extinct, and polluted air, water, and food supplies are widespread. The low grade coal consumed in the Czech Republic during the last 50 yr have resulted in excessive atmospheric sulfur dioxide and particulate levels, along with attendant health problems and forest ecosystem damage. Environmental recovery is being pursued as a route to economic and social recovery. Despite challenges posed by the recent emergence of two nations from the former Czechoslovakia, air and water quality have improved slightly and risk assessment policies are being implemented.
