Abstract

This is not a numerical analysis textbook in the traditional sense; it is for a course where the use of the term "numerical methods" in the title is quite intentional. The author has taught the course primarily using Jupyter Notebooks with Julia as the programming language. In the author's own use of this text, it is a supplement to the Jupyter Notebooks that form the body of the lectures. These notebooks contain Markdown cells for many of the same definitions, main theorems and formal algorithms, but are interspersed with computational examples in Julia that can be modified on the fly. Detailed hand calculations are worked out on a note-taking tablet, white-board or blackboard. Ayati's intent for this text is to balance the range of presentation styles during lectures, meant to flesh out individual topics, with a resource that gives context in an accessible way, as well as details or background left out of the lectures.
