Abstract
The University of Iowa has resources available to all students during a mental health crisis. I wanted to explore how undergraduates utilize the counseling services at the University of Iowa. I was curious about undergraduates’ experiences and thoughts about the awareness and effectiveness of these resources available while living in the same environment with the available resources during a mental health crisis. Additionally, I was curious to explore the connection that if the issue on college campuses of, if the students are unaware, uncomfortable, or in any other way blocked from utilizing the counseling services that are available to them, there is another hindrance to mental health care on many college campuses, specifically looking at the University of Iowa’s campus. To collect my data, I created a survey on Qualtrics that was sent to the University of Iowa undergraduate students that included questions of familiarity with the University of Iowa’s Counseling Services, if and what services they have used before, what improvements and changes could be made, and any history with counseling outside of school. Twenty-nine percent of students were not aware of the counseling services at the University of Iowa when asked to identify any barriers to accessing the services. Many suggested more staffing at the counseling center, having professors take more time to speak about the resources available, and including more resources about the process of making appointments and the variety of services they have.
