"Crater Lake" is a short story cycle exploring themes of queerness and Catholicism, working within the storytelling constraints of bildungsroman while attempting to subvert the genre in a way that highlights the extended adolescence that growing up in a homophobic environment creates. The characters grapple with vocation, infidelity, and abuse, all while trying to reconcile themselves with the small town they call their home. They are not the same person at the end of the story that they were at the beginning--they have come of age, in some small way, through self-acceptance.
