Abstract
Nation building is a dynamic and continuous process for nations, young or old. It may involve using a common language, religion, or ethnicity. For Singapore, a young multiethnic nation, it involves the use of laws to establish what constitutes a Singaporean. The continued use of capital punishment in Singapore has raised international awareness of the number of executions occurring after COVID-19. These drug policies stem from the effects of British colonization, and the issue of drugs also arises from the globalization of Singapore’s entrepot system. The current Singapore government maintains the use of capital punishment, despite calls for a global moratorium. It protects the nation from any vulnerability and functions as a separation between citizens and non-citizens. This thesis examines the use of laws through a review of scholarly articles and Singaporean governmental reports to define boundaries of what constitutes Singapore’s imagined community, specifically against the use of drugs. This thesis analyzes three cases of criminals sentenced to death for drug trafficking, and how Singapore defends the use of capital punishment as a form of sovereignty and nationalism.
