Abstract
Neuropsychologists have developed many tools to assess for deficits in mental faculties. One of such tools, the Judgment of Line Orientation (JLO) is a highly reliable and valid measure of visuospatial ability, or the ability to orient to and understand what is seen. Previous literature has suggested that demographic factors of race and ethnicity may lead to different performance outcomes across racial groups for a variety of tests, but no work has examined this effect in the JLO. Because the JLO still follows norms established by its initial publication in 1978, it may be vulnerable to demographic influences. To address this, we recruited cognitively healthy adults through mass email, and through the Benton Neuropsychology Clinic, and ran analyses on previously collected data on older adults, as well as analyzed lesion data to compare to previous results. Although current findings of newly collected data are insignificant and underpowered, this study is still ongoing. Previous data on differences in performance between older adults was also not statistically significant, however lesion data showed peaks in the putamen. The findings of the first 2 analyses require more data collection, with the results of the third being a promising look into more processes that may be implicated in visuospatial ability.
