Abstract
The church of St Michael in the town of Coventry, England has a rich but poignant history: originally built in the Middle Ages, the church was tragically bombed during the Second World War, and rebuilt in modern style after the war. While many scholars have considered the construction of the building, which was designed in deliberate dialogue with the medieval ruins, few have discussed its stained glass, both medieval and modern. The present study addresses this issue, focusing on the creation of Coventry’s Baptistery window by John Piper and collaborating stained-glass artists Patrick Reyntiens, which shows the complexity of the issues that post-war artists faced while navigating between historicism and modernism.
