The full title of this Preconference was Getting Ready for the Nineteenth Century: Strategies and Solutions for the Acquisition, Cataloging, Preservation, and Research Use of Published and Unpublished Materials from the Nineteenth Century. Owners and collectors care deeply about the antiques, heirlooms, and other object they possess: books, furniture, photographs, Bibles, diaries, china -- and many, many other kinds of "things," many not rare and many not valuable. This presentation was an attempt to put that preservation passion, and the vast number of hints, pieces of advice, and instructions that abound, into a context that helps match concern with appropriate technique.

Presentation made at the 1975 SCONUL conference on the history of bookbinding. This paper was a contribution describing the University of Chicago Library's then active program of commissioning repair and rebinding for books and manuscripts in the rare book collection. It was illustrated with slides which have been digitized (2015) after 40 years. Much reduced in size here, please forgive their variable quality.
